Kalash handpaintied in Mithila / Madhubani Painting

Kalash (Pot) with Coconut and Mango leaves handpainted in the style of Mithila / Madhubani painting.

The design is decorated with motifs of Fish, Shankh, Lotus (Kamal), Diya (earthen lamp), flowers and leaves etc in border and background.

When I thought of a painting for the front entrance I thought of the auspicious Kalash with Coconut and Mango Leaves. Traditionally it has been considered auspicious in Indian rituals. Normally the pot is filled with coins, grain, gems, gold, or the combination  or water. Usually a coronet of 5 mango leaves is kept on the pot with Coconut on the top.

Mithila Paintings are mostly symbolic paintings. So here in this painting I took the liberty of filling the details on the symbolic Kalash with various motifs of Mithila Painting i.e. Fish, Shankh, Lotus etc. with the bases color of blue. Similarly in coconut I used the base colour as red to keep it in symbolically in sync with the normal color of coconut with detail designs as  a feature of Madhubani paintings including the motifs of Diya (auspicious earthen Lamps). Here I made only 4 mango leaves with 2 on both sides as a symbol for the mango leaves on the pot  instead of the usual 5. I took my artistic and aesthetic liberty of following the synchronization balance and assuming the fifth one on the back. I understand this is slightly unusual of Mithila Paintings which are 2D paintings so experts including my mother may differ with me on this.
